The eleventh World Wine Awards, the prestigious wine competition established by the British magazine, Decanter, brought producers and great wines from all around the world to London. Among the stars of the evening was Duca Enrico 2009, which after being awarded the Gold Medal, also won a Regional Trophy* Red Southern Italy over £15! An important recognition that comes in a special year for Duca Enrico, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Produced for the first time in 1984, Duca Enrico was the first single varietal wine made from Nero d’Avola grapes in the history of Sicilian wines, and in these three decades has become one of the international icons of Made in Italy winemaking. Dedicated to Enrico Alliata, eleventh Duke of Salaparuta, whose perception and intelligence made him a true master of Sicilian winemaking, this noble wine is a unique product that only the extensive know-how and long tradition combined with a powerful drive to innovate that have always been Duca di Salaparuta’s hallmarks could create. A wine with a great history behind it, but above all, a wine to taste for the simple pleasure of enjoying a product with unique personality and balance. *Winning a Regional Trophy is a truly exceptional result. Only 158 out of over 15,000 wine won a Regional Trophy at DWWA 2014 – 1% of all participating wines.
If a wine wines a Gold Medal, it goes through a further re-tasting selection together with other gold medal-winning wines of the same country, region or style. The wines considered the best in this tasting are awarded Regional Trophies.
All wines that then win Regional Trophies go on to a further final tasting in which the International Trophies are awarded.
