Have you ever bought a bottle of special wine and kept it to enjoy a moment of pleasure with friends on a particularly grey day? I have, but the problem was I did not know exactly the best way to store it. So I thought it would be a good idea to ask our winemakers, and here are their valuable suggestions:
– Both red and white wines that age in bottles should be kept in a horizontal position to ensure their longevity. In the horizontal position, the wine keep the cork moist, ensuring the bottle is airtight and preventing the entry of unwanted oxygen. If the bottle was stored upright, the cork could dry out and let in oxygen which would turn the wine to vinegar.
– Once laid down correctly, the bottle should be kept at a constant temperature (around 16°C), in an environment with 75-80% humidity.
When you decide the time has come to uncork your wine, temperature will continue to play an important role. Drinking a wine at the right temperature ensures its pleasantness and above all, reduces any inharmonious sensations to the minimum and lets you appreciate its characteristics to the full. But don’t wait too long, every day should have its special moment!
