Having discovered how best to preserve our prized wines and learned which is the right moment to uncork them before drinking, there is still one more important question… the decanter! What is it and what is it for? The decanter is a special container, similar to an ampoule, in clear glass or crystal, that is used to decant a wine so that it can develop its aromatic bouquet to the full. Decanting wine is especially important if it has been in the bottle for a long time, such as Duca Enrico 1985, because it immediately aerates it, or if any sediment that has formed, or a cork that has crumbled, needs to be separated. Pouring the wine from the bottle into the decanter saturates it with the oxygen needed to develop its flavours and aromas, a process that also continues as it is swirled in the glass. These steps are not connoisseurs’ affectations, but simple rules that, if applied, will allow you to enjoy every wine at its very best. Try it and you’ll see the difference!
