From this year, the range of Duca di Salaparuta wines produced with grapes from the Vajasindi Estate on the slopes of Mount Etna encompasses a new Pinot Noir: Sciaranèra. In this complex, multi-faceted area, where the volcanic soil gives the vineyards unique characteristics, Duca di Salaparuta has chosen to plant Nerello Mascalese, a variety indigenous to Etna with which Làvico is made, and Pinot Noir, a noble variety that produces refined wines with a distinctive personality and unmistakable elegance.
After the arduous challenge presented by Nawàri, the first single varietal Pinot Noir made with grapes from the Vajasindi Estate, Sciaranèra, produced with grapes grown on the Estate’s lower terrace, is proof that Pinot Noir has found a congenial home on the rugged slopes of Etna. Difficult to work, but also fascinating, volcanic terrain gives the vines inimitable characteristics which Duca di Salaparuta has decided to celebrate with this new wine, and with an absolutely unique pack. A presentation casket made from a single block of lava stone, cut in half and carved to create a perfect recess to hold the bottle Sciaranèra.
This unique pack, which symbolizes the close ties between the wines of the Vajasindi Estate and the terroir from which they originate, is made as a special edition by Saverio Ciaccia*, a modern craftsman in natural stone. An innovative process that gives clean, precise cuts was used to create this lava stone casket to contain Sciaranèra, an intense, austere wine of unexpected, dazzling beauty like its land of origin.
A red wine with seductive freshness, where fruit and spices blend harmoniously, Sciaranèra expresses a perfect balance of fruity aromas and those of maturation, which blend in a wine where smoothness and complexity reach an ideal, unforgettable compromise. Ruby red in colour, with a bouquet where notes of red berries blend with floral scents and pronounced spicy notes, this elegantly velvety wine has a smooth taste with a pleasing perception of tannin.
